Our pupils take their test at St Albans or Borehamwood test centre, whichever suits them best. Here are our honest driving test tips for both, starting with the one most people don’t expect.
Why we don’t teach set routes
Test routes aren’t published, and examiners can take you anywhere around the test centre. Learning a few routes off by heart gives a false sense of security, and it does nothing for you once you’ve passed.
We teach you to be a safe, defensive driver who can handle any road. When you can do that, the route doesn’t matter.
Be ready for any type of road
Around both test centres you could meet:
- busy town centre traffic, with pedestrians and parked cars
- roundabouts of all sizes, including multi-lane ones
- faster roads and dual carriageways
- quieter residential streets, with junctions and hazards around every corner
- country roads with bends and changing speed limits
That’s why our lessons use a wide mix of roads across Hertfordshire, not just the streets near the test centre.
Know the common mistakes
Independent driving
Part of your test is independent driving, following a sat nav or road signs. If you go the wrong way, it isn’t a fault. Stay calm, drive safely, and the examiner will help you get back on route.
In the weeks before your test
- Have a mock test with your instructor, so test conditions feel normal.
- Practise your manoeuvres until they feel calm and controlled.
- Learn the show me, tell me questions.
- Keep lessons regular, right up to the week of your test.
- Have a lesson just before your test to warm up.
