Become a
Driving Instructor

Train with Herts Driver Training to become a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor. We provide Part 2 training, the 40 hours of training you need after Part 2, and sponsorship for your trainee licence (the pink badge).

Is it right for you?

Teaching people to drive is a rewarding job. You help people of all ages gain a skill that gives them independence, and you work one-to-one, so no two days are the same.

It takes patience, clear communication and a high standard of driving yourself. A good instructor doesn’t just get people through the test. They turn out safe, confident drivers who can handle any road.

To start training with the DVSA, you must:

  • be 21 or over
  • have held a full car driving licence for at least 3 years
  • not have been banned from driving in the last 4 years
  • be a ‘fit and proper’ person, which is checked with a new DBS check when you apply

How to qualify, step by step

1. Apply and get a DBS check

Apply to the DVSA to start the process. You’ll need a new DBS check, even if you already have one.

2. Pass Part 1: theory test (£81)

Multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test. You can take it as many times as you need. Once you pass, you have 2 years to pass Parts 2 and 3.

3. Part 2: driving ability (£111)

A test of your own driving, to a much higher standard than a normal driving test. We provide Part 2 training to get you ready. You have 3 attempts.

4. Your 40 hours of training

After passing Part 2, you complete 40 hours of instructor training with us. This is needed before you can apply for your trainee licence.

5. Your pink badge (£140)

With our sponsorship, you apply for a trainee licence, known as the pink badge. It lasts 6 months and lets you teach real pupils while you prepare for Part 3.

6. Part 3: instructional ability (£111)

An examiner watches you give a real lesson and assesses how well you teach. You have 3 attempts.

7. Register as an ADI (£300)

Once you’ve passed all three parts, you register as an Approved Driving Instructor within 12 months. After that, you have a standards check at least every 4 years.

The pink badge explained

The trainee licence, known as the pink badge because of its colour, is optional, but it’s one of the best ways to prepare for Part 3. It lets you give driving lessons to real pupils, so you build experience before your instructional ability test.

To apply, you must have passed Part 2, be sponsored by an Approved Driving Instructor, and have completed 40 hours of instructor training, with at least a quarter of it in the car. Herts Driver Training provides both the training and the sponsorship.

The licence lasts 6 months. When you apply, you choose how you’ll be supported: either your sponsor supervises some of your lessons, or you complete at least 20 hours of extra training. You display the badge in the windscreen whenever you teach.

Questions about becoming a driving instructor

Do I need a pink badge to qualify?

No, it’s optional. But it lets you teach real pupils for 6 months before your Part 3 test, which is the best preparation you can get.

When do I do the 40 hours of training?

After you’ve passed Part 2. You need to complete it before you can apply for your pink badge, and we provide it along with your sponsorship.

How many attempts do I get?

You can take Part 1 as many times as you need. You get 3 attempts at Part 2 and 3 attempts at Part 3, all within 2 years of passing Part 1.

How much are the DVSA fees in total?

£603 for the three tests and registration, or £743 with the pink badge, plus the cost of your DBS check. Our training is separate.
