How to Choose
a Driving School

The checks to make, the questions to ask, and the warning signs to look out for.

Knowing how to choose a driving school can save you time, money and stress. A good instructor makes learning safer and more enjoyable, and helps you pass with skills that last. Here’s what to look for.

Check your instructor is approved

Anyone you pay for driving lessons must be either a qualified approved driving instructor (ADI) or a trainee instructor, both registered with the DVSA.

They must show a badge in the car’s windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified instructor. A pink badge means a trainee instructor. If someone charges for lessons without either, you can report them to the DVSA.

Questions worth asking

  • How long are the lessons, and how much do they cost?
  • Are lessons one-to-one?
  • Will I have the same instructor each time?
  • Do you teach in a manual or automatic car?
  • Where can you pick me up and drop me off?
  • What happens if I need to cancel or move a lesson?

What good teaching looks like

  • Each lesson has a clear goal, and you talk about how it went at the end.
  • You’re given an honest view of your progress, even when it’s not what you want to hear.
  • You drive on a wide mix of roads, not just the same few streets.
  • You’re taught to drive safely for life, not just to pass a test.

Warning signs

  • No badge on show in the windscreen.
  • Pressure to buy a large block of lessons before you’ve tried one.
  • Being told you’re ready for your test when you don’t feel ready.
  • Lessons spent mostly parked up, or going over the same thing every time.

Price isn’t everything

Cheap lessons can cost more in the end if you need extra lessons or more than one test. Look at what you get for your money: lesson length, one-to-one time and how much you actually drive.
