Pass Plus
Course

6 hours of extra training for new drivers, from town driving to motorways.

Our Pass Plus course helps new drivers get used to roads and conditions they may not have met during lessons. We’re registered to teach Pass Plus, and the course takes 6 hours, as 3 one-to-one lessons of 2 hours each.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a practical course from the DVSA, designed to help you improve your skills and drive more safely. Any driver can take it, at any time. However, it’s most useful in the first year after you pass your test.

The course takes at least 6 hours, and you must learn with an instructor who’s registered for Pass Plus.

The 6 Pass Plus modules

The course covers 6 modules. Here’s what you’ll practise in each one.

1. Town driving

Busy town centres, such as St Albans and Hatfield, with heavy traffic, bus lanes, cyclists and pedestrians. You’ll also practise planning ahead and dealing with complex junctions.

2. All weathers

How to adjust your speed and following distance in rain, fog, low sun and icy conditions. If the weather doesn’t allow it on the day, we’ll cover some of this module as theory instead.

3. Rural roads

Country lanes with sharp bends, hills and narrow sections. You’ll also learn how to pass horse riders, cyclists and farm vehicles safely.

4. Night driving

Using your headlights correctly, dealing with dazzle from oncoming traffic, and judging speed and distance in the dark. Where possible, we’ll plan this lesson for after dark.

5. Dual carriageways

Joining and leaving at higher speeds, choosing the right lane, and overtaking safely. Local roads such as the A414 and A405 are ideal for this.

6. Motorways

Joining from a slip road, keeping to the left lane unless overtaking, and leaving safely. We’ll also cover smart motorways and what to do if you break down. The M25, M1 and A1(M) are all close by. For more, read driving on the motorway for the first time.

How our Pass Plus course works

  • The course is 3 lessons of 2 hours each, so 6 hours in total.
  • Every lesson is one to one, in our dual-controlled car.
  • We can pick you up from home, school or work.
  • There’s no test. Instead, we assess you as you go, and you need to reach the required standard in all 6 modules.

Getting your Pass Plus certificate

When you reach the standard in every module, we’ll give you a training report form. Then we both sign it, and you send it to the DVSA. Your certificate should arrive within 2 weeks.

You need to apply for your own certificate if you want one, so don’t forget to send the form off.

Will Pass Plus lower my insurance?

It might. Some insurers give a discount if you have a Pass Plus certificate, but not all of them do, and the amount varies. So check with your insurer before you book.

Also, if you passed your test more than a year ago, check that you can still get a discount. Read your first car insurance as a new driver for more tips.

How much does Pass Plus cost?

Our full Pass Plus course costs £240. That’s 3 lessons of 2 hours at £80 each.

Is Pass Plus worth it?

For most new drivers, the extra experience is the real value, especially on motorways and at night. We’ve looked at the pros and cons in Pass Plus: is it worth it?

Alternatively, if you only want help with one or two things, our refresher lessons might suit you better. It’s also worth reading the new driver rules for your first 2 years.
