Nervous About
Learning to Drive?

Practical tips to help you feel calmer and more in control behind the wheel.

Calm learner driver taking a deep breath before a driving lesson

If you’re nervous about learning to drive, you’re far from alone. Many of our learners start out anxious, and plenty go on to become calm, confident drivers. Nerves are normal, and there’s a lot you can do to ease them.

Tell your instructor

The most useful thing you can do is be honest about how you feel. Your instructor can then go at a pace that suits you, start on quieter roads and explain things in smaller steps. You won’t be asked to do anything you’re not ready for.

Before each lesson

  • Get a good night’s sleep and eat something beforehand.
  • Wear comfortable, flat shoes.
  • Leave time to arrive calm rather than rushed.
  • Think about one thing you’d like to work on.

During the lesson

  • Breathe slowly. A few slow breaths when you stop at junctions can help a lot.
  • Ask questions. If something isn’t clear, ask. There’s no such thing as a silly question.
  • Ask to pull over. If you need a break, say so. Your instructor can find somewhere safe to stop.
  • Focus on what’s ahead. Look well ahead and think about what’s coming next, not what just happened.

Mistakes are part of learning

Everyone stalls, takes a wrong turn or misjudges something while learning. That’s what lessons are for. Your instructor has dual controls and is there to keep you safe while you learn from it.

After each lesson, think about what went well, not just what went wrong. Progress often feels slow until you look back.

Why longer lessons help

Our lessons are 2 hours long. Many nervous learners find the first part of a lesson the hardest, so a longer lesson gives you time to settle in and finish on a good note.

Help with test nerves

One of our instructors has completed the Driving Test Nerves Specialist Workshop run by Diane Hall of L of a Way 2 Pass. That means we can help with nerves on test day as well as during your lessons. Read more in driving test nerves: how to stay calm on the day.
