Learning to Drive
as an Adult

It’s never too late. What’s different, the advantages you have, and how to get started.

Learning to drive as an adult is more common than you might think. People start in their twenties, thirties and well beyond, for a new job, a family or simply more freedom. There’s no upper age limit, and it’s never too late.

The steps are the same

  • Get your provisional licence. You can apply online at GOV.UK for £34.
  • Start your lessons.
  • Pass your theory test.
  • Book and pass your practical test.

The advantages you have

  • Road sense. Years as a passenger, cyclist or pedestrian mean you already understand a lot about traffic.
  • Motivation. You’re learning because you’ve chosen to, often with a clear reason.
  • Paying your own way. You can choose how often to have lessons and plan around your budget.

What can feel harder

Many adults feel more nervous than teenagers, partly because they’re more aware of the risks. Fitting lessons around work and family can also be tricky. Both are completely normal, and both can be managed.

If nerves are holding you back, our tips for nervous learners may help.

Tips for adult learners

  • Book lessons at regular times, so they become part of your week.
  • Try to keep gaps between lessons short.
  • Get some private practice if someone can supervise you.
  • Be patient with yourself. Progress isn’t always steady, but it adds up.
