Your First Car Insurance
as a New Driver

Your options, honest ways to lower the cost, and why fronting is never worth it.

New driver insurance can be expensive, and it often comes as a shock after passing your test. Here are your options, some honest ways to bring the cost down, and one shortcut you should never take.

You must be insured

Driving without insurance can mean an unlimited fine, a driving ban and up to 8 penalty points. Under the new driver rules, that could cost you your licence. Read the new driver rules.

Your options

  • Your own policy: you’re the main driver of your own car.
  • Named driver: you’re added to someone else’s policy, such as a parent’s, for a car they mainly drive and you drive sometimes.
  • Black box (telematics): a small device or app records how you drive. Careful, smooth driving can bring the price down.

Never ‘front’ a policy

Fronting is when a parent or older driver is put down as the main driver of a car that you actually drive most. It might look cheaper, but it’s insurance fraud.

Your insurance could be invalid, leaving you effectively uninsured, with the fines, ban and costs that come with it. It can also lead to a criminal record, and make insurance much harder to get in future.

Honest ways to lower the cost

  • Compare quotes before you choose a car. The car’s insurance group makes a big difference.
  • Smaller, lower-powered cars are usually cheaper to insure.
  • Consider a black box policy.
  • Pay annually if you can, as monthly payments often cost more overall.
  • Think carefully about your voluntary excess. A higher excess can lower the price, but you’ll pay more if you claim.
  • Ask whether your insurer offers a Pass Plus discount. Not all do.
