Driving on the Motorway
for the First Time

How to join, which lane to use, smart motorway signs, and tips to feel confident.

New driver joining a UK motorway from a slip road

Driving on the motorway for the first time can feel like a big step, especially if you’ve only just passed. With the M25 and M1 on the doorstep in Hertfordshire, it’s worth getting comfortable with them early. Motorways are actually some of the safest roads, once you know the rules.

Can learners drive on motorways?

Yes, but only with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls and L plates. Learners can’t drive on motorways with a parent or friend. Once you’ve passed, you can drive on them straight away.

Joining the motorway

  • Use the slip road to build up your speed to match the traffic in the left-hand lane.
  • Check your mirrors and look over your right shoulder for a gap.
  • Give way to traffic already on the motorway. Don’t force your way in.
  • Don’t cross the solid white lines or use the hard shoulder to join.

Which lane to use

  • Keep to the left-hand lane unless you’re overtaking.
  • Overtake on the right only, then move back left when it’s safe.
  • Don’t overtake on the left, and don’t weave between lanes.
  • If you miss your exit, carry on to the next one. Never reverse or turn round.

Smart motorway signs

  • Red X: that lane is closed. You must not drive in it. Move to an open lane when it’s safe.
  • Speed limits in a red circle: these are legal limits, and you must stick to them.
  • Hard shoulder: only use it in an emergency, unless a speed limit is shown above it to open it as a lane.
  • Emergency areas: these are for emergencies only.

Tips for your first drive

  • Choose a quieter time for your first trip, not rush hour.
  • Keep a safe gap. On a dry road, leave at least a two-second gap to the car in front.
  • Plan your exit early and move into the left lane in good time.
  • Take breaks on long journeys. Motorway driving can make you sleepy.
  • Expect other drivers to make mistakes, and give yourself space.
