Buying Your First Car:
What to Look For

What to check before you buy, so you don’t get caught out.

Buying your first car is exciting, but it’s easy to get caught out. A few simple checks before you hand over any money can save you a lot of trouble.

Set your budget, including insurance

The price of the car is only part of the cost. Insurance, tax, fuel, servicing and repairs all add up. For new drivers, insurance can cost more than you expect, so get quotes for the exact car before you buy. Read your first car insurance as a new driver.

Check the MOT history

Use the MOT history check on GOV.UK with the car’s registration number. It shows past MOT results, the recorded mileage at each test, and any problems found. A mileage that goes down, or a long list of repeated problems, is a warning sign.

Check the logbook (V5C)

  • Ask to see the V5C logbook, and check the details match the car.
  • Make sure the seller’s name and address match the logbook.
  • View the car at the address on the logbook, not in a car park or lay-by.

Look the car over

  • Check the tyres, lights and bodywork, and look for warning lights on the dashboard.
  • Ask for the service history.
  • Take it for a test drive, making sure you’re insured to drive it first.
  • If you’re unsure, take someone who knows cars, or pay for an inspection.

Tax it before you drive away

Vehicle tax doesn’t transfer when a car is sold, so you need to tax it before you drive it. You can do this online using the reference number on the green ‘new keeper’ slip from the logbook.

Choosing the right first car

  • A smaller, lower-powered car is usually cheaper to insure and run.
  • Good all-round visibility makes driving easier.
  • Parking sensors or a reversing camera can help, but keep using your mirrors and looking all around.
