Every cost in one place, plus honest ways to keep the total down.

How much does it cost to learn to drive? It’s one of the first things learners and parents ask. Here’s every cost in one place, so there are no surprises.

The fixed costs

  • Provisional licence: £34 online, or £43 by post.
  • Theory test: £23.
  • Practical driving test: £62 on a weekday, or £75 on evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Retakes: if you need to retake either test, you pay the full fee again.

Driving lessons

With us, a 2 hour lesson is £80, or our 10 hour package is £380, which saves you £20.

The number of lessons you need is the biggest part of the total, and it’s different for everyone. As an example, if you needed 40 hours of lessons, four 10 hour packages would come to £1,520. Read how many driving lessons do you need? for more on what affects it.

Other costs to think about

  • Theory test revision materials, such as the official DVSA app.
  • Insurance if you practise in a family car. The car must be insured for you as a learner.
  • Fuel for private practice.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Have lessons regularly, so you don’t lose progress between them.
  • Get some private practice in between lessons, if you can.
  • Book your test only when you’re ready. A retest costs more than an extra lesson or two.
  • Choose longer lessons. Our 2 hour lessons give you time to practise properly, rather than stopping just as it clicks.
  • Cheapest isn’t always best. Read how to choose a driving school.
